What book did you read?
Home of the Brave, by Kathleen Applegate
It’s about a kid who goes to America from Africa. The story is about him and his relationship with this cow. Its name is Gol, which means family in Africa. He moves to America because of the war in Sudan.
Why do you think this book is multicultural?
One of the people was from Sudan. He’s a refugee who just got to the US. His best friend was from Central America. Other people in his class were from South America. In Kek’s culture it was polite to take all of a food item if offered…so he took all of the cookies when the plate was offered, “just to be polite.”
What are some African Proverbs you learned from this book?
“When an elephant fights, it is the grass that suffers.”
“You only make a bridge when there is a river.”
“One doesn’t forego sleeping because of the possibility of nightmares.”
“When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.”
“A sandstorm passes; the stars remain”
What was the first paragraph?
When the flying boat
returns to earth at last,
I open my eyes
and gaze out the round window.
What is all the white? I whisper.
Where is all the world?
What is one thing you learned from this book?
I learned about a refugee camp. I never knew that there were kids at a refugee camp.
Why did you pick Sea Green as the typeface color for your interview?
Because it’s cool.
